Finding things to do in Cranston

Shopping & Things To Do

The main shopping attraction in Cranston is Garden City Center and Chapel View  where you can find everything from apparel to upscale groceries to top-notch restaurants all in one place! Cranston is also home to many small business shopping districts, such as Rolfe Square and Pawtuxet Village.

Take a quick trip over to the city line to Warwick to visit the Rhode Island Mall or Warwick Mall.

Recreation & Activities

Like to get out on-the-town? Take a long stroll down the Washington Secondary Bike Path (the longest in the state at 19 miles) or explore the museums in Roger Williams Park Zoo. Cranston also has community attractions like Confreda Greenhouses and Farms, where you can visit the local farmer’s market. Or bring the family to Mulligan’s Island for mini golf, driving ranges, batting cages and more!

Roger Williams Park & Zoo

435 acres of public access land offering a variety of recreational and educational activities for visitors. You have more than five miles of walking paths throughout the wooded grounds, each wrapping around the three ponds inside the park. The park includes public gardens, tennis courts, ball fields, playgrounds, public art installations. Inside you’ll find the Museum of Natural History, the Botanical Center, the Temple to Music, and the Casino.

Washington Secondary Bike Path

Also called the “Trestle Trail”, Washington Secondary Bike Path is a 19-mile path extending from Cranston to the edges of Coventry and Connecticut. It’s picturesque, easily accessed at multiple points, and provides residents a great way for casual exercise throughout the year.

Mulligan’s Island

A very popular sports & recreation spot for locals. The facility is tropical themed and offers fun activities like mini golf, batting cages, pitch & putt, volleyball, and driving ranges. Your kids can join the golf academy or summer camps as well, where they can get professional instruction.

Confreda Greenhouses & Farm

Great place to visit for fresh produce, meat, and prepared gourmet foods. Confreda is especially known for its seasonal sweet corn and homemade pies. You can buy different plants, soil, and compost here as well. It’s a family-owned farm and business and the people here are always friendly!

Meshanticut Lake

A small, 12-acre lake within Meshanticut State Park. It’s a pleasant little lake and a good place to take children for a short paddle on very protected and easy waters. There is a public boat launch for hand-carried boats, canoes, and kayaks. Or you can take a leisurely stroll around their three-quarter-mile shaded walking path.

Budlong Pool & Recreation Facility

A seasonal in-ground public pool with lifeguards on-duty. It’s a very popular spot for kids, always kept clean, and affordable for Cranston residents ($3.00 for a day pass). The pool is enormous and accommodates hundreds of people during the busy season, and there are basketball courts and ball fields for public use.

Transportation & Getting Around

It’s very easy to navigate in and around Cranston. Two major highways run through the center of Cranston (I-95 & I-295) which lead into Providence or the northern suburbs of the city. Most areas of Cranston are within a 10 – 15 minute drive to T.F. Green Airport. Travelling through the center of Cranston, you have Route 2 and Route 5 — both of which are lined with shopping, restaurants, and recreation spots. Both streets lead into Lower South Providence and connect to I-95 and I-295 via the Route 37 connector.

Cranston is unique because it has all three types of housing situations — urban, suburban, and rural. Transportation methods vary depending on what neighborhood you live in. For instance, Western Cranston — which is everything west of I-295 and Route 37 — is more rural than the rest of the city. Route 51 and Route 12 are the main roads connecting this portion of the city to Scituate and West Warwick. RIPTA bus access is limited here compared to areas closer to Garden City or Pawtuxet Village. And it’s a little more “out of the way” if you’re riding a bike or walking.

Additional Transportation Information

Airport

Distance to T.F. Green Airport: 4 miles

Train Station

Distance to Providence Train Station: 4.9 miles

Where to eat in Providence County, Rhode Island

You will find a vibrant and diverse food scene that offers something for everyone in Providence County. The city of Providence is known for its creative chefs, innovative cuisine, and a variety of international flavors. However, there is so much more to the food scene in this county.

This county offers a dynamic and exciting food scene that caters to all tastes and preferences. From classic New England seafood to international flavors and creative farm-to-table cuisine, there's something for everyone. Here are a few favorites from each of the many communities within Providence county.

You might be surprised to know this, but Providence’s restaurant scene is widely regarded as one “the best” dining destinations in the U.S.

In 2012, Travel & Leisure Magazine rated Providence as the “#1 Food City” in the United States. A few restaurants in particular, such as Oberlin and North, have been recognized by Bon Appetit Magazine and other publications as top-rated across the U.S.

There are too many dining and bar options in Providence to list, but here are a few “hotspot” neighborhoods where you’ll find more than enough food & drink fun.

Burrillville restaurants & Night Life

This county offers a dynamic and exciting food scene that caters to all tastes and preferences. From classic New England seafood to international flavors and creative farm-to-table cuisine, there's something for everyone. Here are a few favorites from each of the many communities within Providence county.

Food spots to check out in Burrillville:

Central Falls restaurants & Night Life

The restaurant scene in Central Falls truly highlights the diversity of the city. Here you’ll find some of the most authentic ethnic spots in the Providence metro area. It’s a hot-spot for Latin restaurants of all kinds, from Colombian to Salvadoran to Mexican.

Food spots to check out in Central Falls:

Cranston restaurants & Night Life

As the third largest city in Rhode Island, Cranston has one of the hottest dining scenes in the state. Numerous restaurants open here every year and there are hundreds— literally! — of local staples that attract crowds of regulars and travelers. You’ll find fine dining options like Twin Oaks and Cucina Rustica, to casual yet refined places like Fresco, 39 West, and Avvio.

Food spots to check out in Cranston:

Cumberland restaurants & Night Life

Cumberland offers quite a few “owner-run” restaurants with a focus on local food and fresh ingredients. You have a great ice cream spot during the summers, an award-winning barbeque restaurant, popular bistros, family-friendly diners, and more.

Food spots to check out in Cumberland:

East Providence restaurants & Night Life

East Providence has quite a large selection of restaurants and bars to choose from. Whether you’re looking for ethnic food, American fare, or anything in-between. There are also nightclubs and entertainment venues many Rhode Islanders travel to visit. Take a look out our list below for highlighted spots.

Food spots to check out in East Providence:

Edgewood restaurants & Night Life

Most of the restaurant scene happens in Pawtuxet Village, inner-city Providence, and other nearby neighborhoods of Cranston. That said, there are a few community “staples” that Edgewood residents love.

Food spots to check out in Edgewood:

Foster restaurants & Night Life

The restaurant scene in Foster is mainly country-style dining with a few options for authentic Italian, Traditional American, and lunch spots.

Food spots to check out in Foster:

Glocester restaurants & Night Life

Most of Glocester’s dining spots are found along Route 44, especially in the villages of Chepachet and Harmony. You have a good range of choices for a small town area, including several pizza shops, taverns, lodge-style dining, and breakfast diners.

Food spots to check out in Glocester:

Johnston restaurants & Night Life

Johnston is one of the towns around Providence that actually has its own dining scene. Due primarily to the strong Italian-American community, you’ll find excellent Italian restaurants here, plus a good range of American and ethnic foods. Besides dining on Federal Hill, the next best area to hit for authentic Italian food is Johnston. Hands down.

Food spots to check out in Johnston:

Lincoln restaurants & Night Life

The dining and nightlife scene in Lincoln is largely influenced by Bally's Twin River Lincoln. People travel from all over the state (and out of state) to Twin River. And for residents, it’s a very convenient and fun way to spend a night out. If you’re looking for an award-winning dining experience, try Fred & Steve's Steak House or for something a little more relaxed, there is Wicked Good Bar & Grill.

Food spots to check out in Lincoln:

North Providence restaurants & Night Life

The nice thing about living in North Providence is that you get two dining destinations at once. Providence is only minutes away, along with all of its renowned restaurants. Plus, you have plenty of options in your own neighborhood. North Providence has a fantastic selection of authentic Italian restaurants, bakeries, pizza joints, and cafes.

Food spots to check out in North Providence:

North Smithfield restaurants & Night Life

North Smithfield’s restaurant scene is heavily centered around the village of Slatersville (with the exception of a few standout establishments). Very popular spots include Wright’s Dairy Farm & Bakery and The Beef Barn. Both of these places are well-known throughout the Rhode Island “foodie scene” as must-visit destination spots. Plus, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafes, bakeries and more to explore in town.

Food spots to check out in North Smithfield :

Pawtucket restaurants & Night Life

Pawtucket’s dining and nightlife scene may get overshadowed by Providence, but people who live here have plenty of options (and Providence is right down the street). Hot spots for great restaurants are Mineral Spring Avenue and Newport Avenue. Or by neighborhood, you can check out places like Woodlawn (right over the Providence line) and downtown Pawtucket.

We’d be remiss not mentioning at least a few “classic” local spots! For breakfast, definitely check out Modern Diner for their historic train car restaurant and hometown atmosphere. Then stop by the Garden Grille for a vegetarian or vegan treat (don’t knock it till you try it!) And finally, grab a spot at the ever-popular Rasoi for an Indian dish you won’t believe. For the after-dinner crowd, go to Murphy’s Law to watch a sports game or shoot pool!

Food spots to check out in Pawtucket:

Pawtuxet Village restaurants & Night Life

There are some highly-rated restaurants in Pawtuxet Village.  Try The Shanty which serves seafood and pub fare. You should also visit the cafes and bakeries in the area. Here are some of our favorites.

Food spots to check out in North Smithfield :

Scituate restaurants & Night Life

Scituate has its local watering holes and restaurants that are worth visiting. Stop by Howards Chowder Shack during the summertime for RI-style favorites like clam chowder, fried clam bellies, and oyster po’boys. For breakfast, you’ll find Cindy’s Diner always packed and bustling. It has a nostalgic, 1950’s interior and atmosphere that adds to the great meal and service. Finally, for one of the best meals in town, definitely try the Corner Bistro for their authentic, country-style cooking.

Food spots to check out in Scituate:

Smithfield restaurants & Night Life

What’s one of the highlights of living in or around Smithfield? This area has a legitimate dining scene! Between Smithfield, Lincoln, Johnston, and nearby North Providence, you have incredible options (particularly for Italian cuisine). You can find fine dining, lunch cafes, taverns, diners, delis, bakeries, and more all within a 10-mile radius.

Food spots to check out in Smithfield :

Woonsocket restaurants & Night Life

Woonsocket is the center of attention for dining and nightlife in the northern part of Rhode Island and surrounding Massachusetts towns. You’ll find many different styles of food & drink along the Blackstone River and historic downtown district. Three restaurants in particular have been serving Woonsocket for decades (or longer!)  — Patriots Diner, River Falls Restaurant, and Chan’s Fine Oriental Cuisine. If you’re thinking about moving to the area and want to get a feel for the locals or see a good show, these are the places to explore, hang out, and meet people.

Shopping & Things To Do in Cranston

The City of Cranston is part of the large metropolitan area of Providence and is located just south of the Capital City, with 3 1/2 miles of shoreline on the Providence River where it begins to broaden into Narragansett Bay. Cranston is also bounded by the City of Warwick and the Towns of West Warwick and Coventry on the south, and by the Town of Scituate on the west. Cranston has a geographical area of 28.2 square miles.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities in Cranston. Here are a few of the top rated and personal favorites.

Garden City Center

Garden City is a commercial shopping outlet located in Cranston. Between the several connected buildings, you have access to more than 40 retail shops, including upscale & boutique shops like Talbots, The Children’s Store, Anthropologie, Sephora, Pottery Barn, Whole Foods, Ann Taylor, and Clarks. Did we mention there are 19 different food & drink spots here as well? You can have everything from craft burgers to high-end seafood plates.

Chapel View

Chapel View opened in 2008 directly across the street from Garden City, this upscale “lifestyle center” houses a mix of high-end retail, office space, condominiums, and restaurants in a charming village setting. You’ll find Alex & Ani, Cold Stone Creamery, Omaha Steaks, Panera Bread, T.J. Maxx, L.L. Bean, and much more. The setting itself is beautiful and you can spend the whole day shopping here!

Pawtuxet Village

Pawtuxet Village is a small seaside village on the easternmost section of Cranston, right next to Edgewood and Roger Williams Park & Zoo. It’s a walkable neighborhood with popular restaurants and bars, boutique shopping, and seasonal outdoor events and festivals. Check out Lanes on Broad, Noon Design Shop, Twice Told Tales, Sweet Indulgence, Revolution, Basta, and PTX while you’re exploring!

Rolfe Square

Circling the area where Pontiac Avenue crosses Park Avenue, Rolfe Square is a popular neighborhood for walkability, shopping, and dining out. If you have a love for small business shopping, this is the place for you. Unlike Chapel View or Garden City Center, here you’ll find all local people running local businesses with hand-crafted and/specialty products. Rolfe Square had several ethnic marketplaces, cool “neighborhood” spots like Bettola Pizza Parlor, and Dave’s Market (a popular locally-owned food mart).

East Greenwich has plenty of recreation & activities for adventure seekers

If you’re not from Rhode Island, it’s very easy to assume that Goddard Memorial State Park is located in East Greenwich. And taking a stroll along the shops and restaurants of the historic, waterfront district is a natural attraction to this area. Annual events include the Memorial and Veteran’s Day Parades. Or catch a live show at the Greenwich Odeum — a historic venue which has hosted to likes of Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys and more.

Goddard Memorial State Park

Goddard Park attracts thousands of visitors each year as Rhode Island’s most popular Metropolitan Park. The park offers a beautiful natural environment with spacious lawns, fields, and forested areas with a variety of trees from all over the world, including 62 deciduous and 19 evergreen species.

Frenchtown Park & Frye Nature Preserve

Scalloptown Park

This small town park at the end of Rocky Hollow Road overlooks Greenwich Bay. The park, though small, offers a just under a mile of walking trails with plenty of benches to sit and view the bay. The park is also popular with locals to bring their dogs. Greenwich Bay once was one of the best shell fishing locations in Rhode Island. Scallops were the main catch here. Therefore this area became known as Scalloptown.

East Greenwich - The Greenwich Odeum

Greenwich Odeum

The Odeum building first opened in 1926 as The Greenwich Theater, built at the end of vaudeville's heyday. A multi-phased renovation was recently started, improving the theater from front to back, top to bottom. We hope you will join us as we move towards a second century on East Greenwich's Main Street!
